A rhythmic shift
in a star’s colour, from blue to red and back, can mean that
the star is heading toward us, then away from us. An unseen object
large enough to affect the star 51 Pegasi must have been orbiting
it, tugging it back and forth.
The extent of the shift is a rough indication
of the object’s mass, and the timing tells how long the orbit
takes. |
