05 - 51 Pegasi

The first planet orbiting a star other than our own sun was found in 1995. This planet circles a sun-like star, 51 PEGASI, in the constellation Pegasus, just over 50 light years away.

The planet’s presence was detected by changes in the spectrum of light that we receive from the star. This is still the primary means by which exoplanets are located.
