Long-period comets reside in the outer reaches of the solar system in a region called the Oort Cloud. It is estimated that there are at least 35,000 Kuiper Belt objects greater than 100 km in diameter and as many as a trillion comets within the Oort cloud. The outer limits of the Oort Cloud extend nearly halfway to the nearest star. |
