Their mother is absent for most of the film, but she is personified in Charlie's pet dog, Loki.

This embodying of personalities or entities in animals or small groups of secondary characters is something which develops further in later work and becomes a stronger part of the work's overall direction.

The Victorian setting was also perfectly suited to the locations available to me in Dublin city centre.

This combining of the Native American myth and the Victorian setting, as a kind of East / West transposition ( regarding native America as a relative East in this context ), is the starting point of the Seventh Earth 'thread' and provides the first points on the map.
